Life Skill:  Self Esteem

Explanation of life skills

Self-esteem is your subjective sense of overall personal worth or value. Like self-respect, it describes your confidence level in your abilities and attributes.

AL QURAN

Surah Taha:25

“O my Lord, open up my chest and untie my tongue and make easy for me my affairs and make my speech understood.”

HADITH

Bukhari, Muslim

 The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said,

“None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”

This hadith assumes that we love ourselves.

 (Abu Dawud, Nasai, Ahmad)

Once, the Prophet (PBUH) saw a man with unkempt hair and remarked, “Does he have nothing with which to comb his hair?” Upon seeing another man with dirty clothes, he asked, “Cannot he find anything to wash his clothes?”

Life Skill:  Critical Thinking

Explanation of life skills

Critical thinking happens when children draw on their existing knowledge and experience, as well as on their problem-solving skills, to do things like:

  • Compare and contrast
  • Explain why things happen
  • Evaluate ideas and form opinions
  • Understand the perspectives of others
  • Predict what will happen in the future
  • Think of creative solutions

AL QURAN

Surah Al A’raf: 185

Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allah has created and (think) that perhaps their appointed time has come near? So in what statement hereafter will they believe?

AL Hujurat: 49

O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify ˹it˺, so you do not harm people unknowingly, becoming regretful for what you have done.

HADITH

Source: Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1327, Grade: Sahih

A particular Hadith often comes up in these discussions about critical thinking. When the Prophet Muhammad was sending Muadh Ibn Jabal to Yemen, the Prophet asked the companion how he was going to make decisions as per the creed [questions from the Prophet are in bold]:

  • How will you judge?
  • Mu’adh said, “I will judge according to what is in the Book of Allah.” The Prophet said:
  • What if it is not in the Book of Allah?
  • Mu’adh said, “Then with the tradition (sunnah) of the Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet said:
  • What if it is not in the tradition of the Messenger of Allah?
  • Mu’adh said, “Then I will strive to form an opinion (ijtihad).”
  • Abu Hurayrah said, “I heard Abu al Qasim (the Prophet), upon him be peace, say, ‘The best among you in Islam are those with the best manners, so long as they develop a sense of understanding.”
