The Importance of Effective Primary Syllabus in Children’s Development
The term syllabus is defined as the lessons and academic content that are taught in schools. Researchers say that the purpose of primary syllabus is to provide students with a chance to get exciting and challenging educational experience in schools.
Its aim is to build an inquiring mind that asks critical questions and knows to create new things. Primary syllabus should also provide a sense of national and cultural values to children, which they can use to become active citizens of the country.
Features of Primary Syllabus:
- Learning Objectives:
This lays out the aims that academic courses will achieve during the whole year. It defines why particular objectives are the most important skills or knowledge for the courses taught. It is also fruitful if objectives are included for each topic/session.
This tells the ways in which the courses relate to primary concepts and principles of various disciplines. It lays out the types of knowledge and abilities by which intellect will be given to students. Moreover, it shows how and why the courses are organized in a particular sequence.
- Course Content:
This brings out the schedule, outline, meeting dates and holidays, major topics and sub-topics preferably with purpose of their inclusion in the books.
- Student Responsibilities:
This highlights the framework for homework, projects, quizzes, exams, reading requirements, participation, due dates, etc. Policies on late work, missed work, etc. are also mentioned.
- Grading Method:
It clearly and explicitly writes the statement of assessment process.
- Materials and Access:
This provides the required texts, readings, and course packs. It tells the ways by which teachers can get materials regarding relevant teaching methods.
- Teaching Philosophy:
It defines the teaching approach of teachers. For instance, they must motivate students to work hard, appreciate creativity, and encourage positivity in students. It also tells that teachers should motivate students to do activity-based learning.
How effectiveness of primary syllabus can be achieved?
The report by Curriculum Development Council states that teachers, who develop primary school syllabus, must understand the growing process of school children. It says that children of different age groups need different learning objectives.
This report also says that understanding and respecting children’s abilities is the basic principle of Early Childhood Education. In addition, it says that children are born learners, who have great ability to understand new things.
Before developing the syllabus for primary schools, the responsible teachers should understand completely the needs of society in designing methods that also meet Government’s policy on education.
It also says that syllabus for primary school must be set in a way that makes children curious about their surrounding environment and they become interested in knowing the different processes of nature.
Teachers must also use practical examples in the classroom while discussing concepts of various disciplines to relate children’s everyday experience with what they are learning. Hence, it says that teachers’ grasp in the field of primary education is necessary for achieving effectiveness in the primary syllabus.
If a teacher becomes the master in basic knowledge of many disciplines, then it becomes easy for him/her to design a syllabus at primary level that meets the diverse learning needs and development of multiple intelligences of students.
Another factor that makes a primary syllabus effective is the sensory exposure of learning concepts given to students. Here sensory exposure means that students act out different concepts in class to understand their real-life application.
The report by Curriculum Development Council states that children learn through their life experiences and interesting activities. Through play and acts, they can learn in a self-motivated, pleasurable, and productive manner.
Interestingly, the report also mentions some key learning areas that a primary syllabus must have. These include Physical fitness and health activities, language skills, basic mathematical skills, science and technological information, knowledge about self and society, and arts and crafts. It says that this classification of subjects allows teachers to design a balanced and easily applicable primary syllabus.
It is argued that school teachers must also keep an eye on maintaining proper learning environment before implementing primary syllabus. It means that students should get proper facilities in class for doing activity-based learning. For example, multimedia becomes helpful if teachers want to explain the concept of light to students. Children can watch videos regarding the concept.
EAST’s English book of Class 1 is a suitable example, where the features mentioned above of primary syllabus are included. The materials in the book are provided in such a way that students develop the love of learning. The book is designed to encourage the participation of students in learning process.
For example, for the reading day, shared/guided reading method is used, where students get a chance to read the chapter with the teacher. In this way, EAST thinks that children’s skills for listening, speaking and reading are developed.
